A tribute to one of my favorite singer/songwriters. The capitalizations are from song titles, but there are also lyrical themes interwoven throughout.
I wasn’t just a boy stuck in a SMALL TOWN
I wasn’t just a man that refused to WALK TALL
But when the PINK HOUSES come CRUMBLING DOWN
TEARDROPS WILL FALL, TEARDROPS WILL FALL
You weren’t the only girl I knew in BIRMINGHAM
But if I CAME KNOCKING I knew you’d go
Like a modern day JACK AND DIANE FIGHTING AUTHORITY
It always wins, It always wins
As we both walked into darkness with, only our hands to hold
We were both looking for something, neither of us could know
We were both so lonely and, at the same time scared
We had the stars up as our canopy there was, magic everywhere
I’m doing a terrible job relating what it was like
But it was the kind of night Mellencamp would write
You said it didn’t matter that I SAW YOU FIRST
You said all that mattered in LIFE IS NOW
Foretold by a reluctant POP SINGER, something about LOVE AND HAPPINESS
It can HURT SO GOOD, Yeah it HURTS SO GOOD
As we both walked into darkness with, only our hands to hold
We were both looking for something, neither of us could know
We were both so lonely and, at the same time scared
We had the stars up as our canopy there was, magic everywhere
I’m doing a terrible job relating what it was like
But it was the kind of night Mellencamp would write
Oh, Mellencamp
Will it be wild? Or will it be lonely?
I’m living it like it’s my one and only
So this here is where he’d kinda talk and sing
Illuminate the mysteries that life can bring
And though it may not be much better, you couldn’t help but grin
You’d uncover the beauty in the common things
Discover inspiration in the yarns he sings
Find the strength to fall off that that horse once again
That’s Mellencamp
That’s John Mellencamp
